Eligibility
✔ Currently in Year 3 or 4 of a Canadian post-secondary program or technical bootcamp (or graduated within the last 6 months) ✔ Available to work full-time market hours: 7am - 5pm EST ✔ Residing in Canada ✔ Able to commute to our Toronto HQ on Tuesday AND Wednesdays OR Thursdays Reporting to a Trader on Securities Lending, you will sit on a fast-paced front-office desk managing inventory across our lending book. This isn't a shadow position, you’ll take direct ownership of day-to-day desk operations and build high-visibility solutions that shape how we scale. Wealthsimple’s Securities Lending desk processes a high volume of trades and returns per day. You will play a mission-critical role in managing this volume while driving automation projects (using SQL, Google Apps Script, and Sheets) that optimize revenue flows, eliminate manual friction, and directly impact desk profitability. What you'll do
Drive high-volume daily execution: Own the entire return process ensuring proper booking, settlement, and daily inventory balance across counterparties. Manage trade desk risk & continuity: Monitor recall notifications, corporate action instructions, and contract compare breaks, acting as a crucial line of defense to prevent financial discrepancies. Cross-functional visibility & stakeholder exposure: Act as a central connector between front-office trading, Treasury, Middle Office, and Engineering teams, while participating in client/counterparty engagements. Assist in providing general trade desk support as required. Build automation & workflow tools (40% project focus): Identify desk bottlenecks and build custom Google Apps Scripts, SQL queries, or P&L tracking tools to automate routine tasks (e.g., morning trading reports, data reconciliations). Troubleshoot breakdowns in daily functions, identify blockers and implement solutions to resolve issues. Learn about the fintech industry and gain insight in the securities finance market.
Skills you bring
Sense of Urgency & Prioritization: Ability to thrive in a high-velocity, live trading environment where market conditions change without notice. You know how to triage urgent tasks versus long-term project work. Process Automation Mindset: Strong proficiency in Google Sheets/Excel (building macros, complex formulas, Google Apps Scripting) and SQL. You don't just execute a repetitive process, you write scripts to automate it. Capital Markets Curiosity: Basic understanding of financial markets, margin, and securities lending mechanics, paired with an eagerness to learn Bloomberg terminal tools. Coachability & Ambition: Scrappy, resilient, and comfortable with ambiguity. You take feedback in stride, ask smart questions when stuck, and proactively chase excellence in your work. Target Profile: Currently pursuing a degree in Business, Finance, STEM or a related field (targeting 3rd/4th year students or recent graduates with prior internship/work experience). 🤑 Base salary range: For this role, candidates located in Canada can expect a base salary range, described in the posting. Actual compensation is determined based on skills, experience, and role level. Exceptional candidates may be considered above the top of the range, and pay can increase quickly for those who make a big impact in the role. • Term 1 students: CAD $43,000 - $44,800 • Term 2 students: CAD $44,000 - $46,500 • Term 3 students: CAD $47,000 - $49,700 • Term 4 students: CAD $48,000 - $50,000 • Term 5 students: CAD $49,000 - $52,000 Your current year of study and number of past internship terms will determine your salary band. Actual compensation within each band is based on skills, experience, and academic performance. Exceptional candidates may be considered above the top of their year's range 🚀.
